The Seattle Kraken have signed Brandon Montour, a highly sought-after right-shot defenseman, to a seven-year contract worth $7.14 million annually. Montour recently played a pivotal role in the Florida Panthers' victory in the Stanley Cup Finals and was considered one of the top defensemen available in free agency.
Montour is anticipated to become a core member of the Kraken alongside Vince Dunn and Justin Schultz. Last season, he was instrumental in the Panthers' power play and averaged over 23 minutes of ice time per game.
Along with Montour, the Kraken have also signed Chandler Stephenson, a two-way center, from the Vegas Golden Knights to a seven-year contract valued at $6.25 million annually. Stephenson, a two-time All-Star, is expected to bolster the Kraken's scoring capabilities for their top forward lines.
These additions are aimed at addressing the Kraken's past difficulties in scoring and enhancing their top-six forward lineup. Stephenson will be paired with Matty Beniers to strengthen the top two lines, while Montour will fortify the defense.
Dan Bylsma, who previously coached the Buffalo Sabres and the Pittsburgh Penguins, will lead the Kraken in his first season as head coach of the franchise.
