The Seattle Kraken is set to move their game broadcasts to a free-to-air platform while collaborating with Amazon's Prime Video for their streaming services. Fans in Washington, Oregon, and Alaska who are Prime Video subscribers will have access to games that aren't nationally broadcasted.
Andy Jassy, the CEO of Amazon, has a minority ownership interest in the Kraken franchise.
The broadcasting duties over the air will be taken up by Tegna, with KONG-TV in Seattle being the primary channel. Additionally, some matches will be shown on KING-TV, the local NBC station, and Tegna’s affiliates in Portland and Spokane will broadcast games, too.
Tegna is also in the process of identifying more broadcasting partners across the three states mentioned.
Due to recent struggles faced by Root Sports, the Kraken’s former broadcaster, the team has been motivated to explore alternative broadcasting avenues.
Sam Holloway, one of the Kraken’s owners, has publicly thanked Root Sports for their past partnership and spoke favorably about the new opportunities for broader reach and more flexible viewing options through TEGNA and Prime Video.
