Nico Sturm scored late in the first period, helping the San Jose Sharks secure a 1-0 victory over the New Jersey Devils on Sunday night. Mackenzie Blackwood played a key role in the win, making 44 saves for the Sharks.
Sturm achieved his third goal of the season just a few minutes before the first period ended. His backhand effort redirected off Timo Meier and slipped past Jake Allen. Carl Grundstrom and Henry Thrun were credited with assists.
In his return to Prudential Center, Blackwood, who joined the Sharks after five seasons with the Devils in June 2023, notched his 11th career shutout.
The defeat brought an end to the Devils' three-game winning run, while the Sharks celebrated their first road win in regulation time this season.
Macklin Celebrini, the Sharks' top draft choice in 2023, made his first appearance against an opponent from the Eastern Conference.
Blackwood was instrumental throughout, delivering crucial saves against players like Jesper Bratt, Jack Hughes, and Brenden Dillon.
This win improved the Sharks' road record to 1-5-1, whereas the Devils saw their home record drop to 4-3-2.
Looking ahead, the Sharks are set to compete against the Philadelphia Flyers on Monday night, and the Devils will meet the Florida Panthers on Tuesday night.
