Edmonton Oilers News & Updates

The Edmonton Oilers have appointed Stan Bowman as their general manager, previously serving in the same capacity for the Chicago Blackhawks. This marks the first such rehiring after the public revelation of the Blackhawks' sexual assault scandal.

The NHL has reinstated Bowman, along with coach Joel Quenneville and executive Al MacIsaac, after investigating their misconduct concerning the allegations made by player Kyle Beach in 2010. Bowman stepped down as Chicago's GM in 2021 due to his role in the scandal.

With considerable experience under his belt, Bowman guided the Blackhawks to three Stanley Cup victories. He is set to take over from Hall of Fame executive Ken Holland, whose contract was not renewed following the Oilers' playoff efforts.

Despite previous shortcomings, the NHL has allowed Bowman, Quenneville, and MacIsaac to return to the league, provided they fulfill certain requirements, such as continuing to participate in programs aimed at abuse prevention.

Sheldon Kennedy, a prominent advocate for preventing abuse in hockey, backs Bowman's rehiring, recognizing his initiatives to correct past mistakes and foster a safer environment.

Bowman, son of hockey icon Scotty Bowman, has a distinguished record for his contributions to the Blackhawks' success. He joined the team in 2001, served as general manager starting in 2009, and later as president of hockey operations beginning in 2020.
