Tampa Bay Lightning News & Updates

On Saturday, the Tampa Bay Lightning made moves to reduce their salary cap by trading Mikhail Sergachev and Tanner Jeannot. Following these trades, the team had an estimated $16.5 million in cap space, leading to speculation that the objective was to re-sign captain Steven Stamkos.

However, General Manager Julien BriseBois announced that Stamkos would enter unrestricted free agency on Monday, despite the Lightning reportedly making long-term offers.

Reports have suggested that the team's offer to Stamkos was set at $3 million per year, marking a significant decrease from his current contract. BriseBois confirmed that Stamkos' agent, Don Meehan, was informed of the unchanged offer post-trades.

There is speculation that the Lightning might look to acquire Carolina Hurricanes winger Jake Guentzel as a potential replacement for Stamkos.

Stamkos, who was the first overall draft pick in 2008, has been a pivotal player for the Lightning. He holds the franchise records for goals, points, and games played, and has secured two Stanley Cup victories with the team.

The Lightning are also in the process of extending the contract of defenseman Victor Hedman, who has one year remaining on his current deal. BriseBois has expressed confidence that an agreement will be made soon.
