In a thrilling match in Buffalo, Tage Thompson shined brightly for the Sabres, propelling them to a 5-2 triumph against the Devils by netting four goals, among them the decisive one with just 4:34 left on the clock. Thompson's impressive hat trick reversed a 2-0 lag, and he crowned his night with an empty-net goal when only six seconds remained.
This defeat set the Devils back, leaving them five points adrift of the Capitals who are clinging on to the last playoff berth in the Eastern Conference. It marked a rare occasion, just the third this season, that New Jersey has lost after holding a lead at the end of the first period.
From Buffalo's lineup, JJ Peterka and Alex Tuch made significant contributions with an empty-net goal and an assist, respectively. Devon Levi, guarding the net, managed to make 28 saves.
For the Devils, it was Max Willman and Jesper Bratt who found the back of the net. Goaltender Jake Allen had a busy night, making 31 saves. The team's rookie defenseman, Luke Hughes, assisted on Willman's goal, bringing his season points tally to 41, which ranks him third in scoring among the team's rookies.
Looking ahead, the Devils are set to welcome the Penguins on Tuesday, whereas the Sabres will be going up against the Maple Leafs on Saturday.
