Victor Hedman and the Tampa Bay Lightning team monitored the impact of Hurricane Milton on their home state from a distance while they were in North Carolina.
Following the storm, they began their regular season with a 4-1 win against the Carolina Hurricanes. The team stayed in Raleigh for several days, practicing and waiting for the hurricane to pass.
Hedman mentioned that the players were glad to have a few days to collect their thoughts and belongings.
The hurricane resulted in at least 10 fatalities and left 1.9 million people in Florida without electricity. As a result, the Lightning's preseason game was canceled, prompting their move to North Carolina ahead of the storm's arrival.
Coach Jon Cooper was uncertain about the team's response after the disruption but was pleased with their performance, particularly in the final period.
Nikita Kucherov scored three goals, which included the decisive goal and two into an empty net.
The game offered a glimpse of normality amidst the turmoil. The players had their families with them, and Cooper took the opportunity to visit both Duke and North Carolina.
The Lightning's following game, initially planned for Saturday, was postponed due to ongoing recovery efforts. They are set to return home and host New Jersey on Tuesday.
Though victorious, Cooper recognized the future challenges for players who might be heading back to damaged homes.
The team plans to concentrate on re-establishing their regular routine and handling the consequences of the hurricane.
