The Toronto Maple Leafs have exchanged defenseman Timothy Liljegren with the San Jose Sharks. In return, they acquired defenseman Matt Benning, along with a third-round draft pick in 2025 and a sixth-round selection in 2026.
Under the guidance of new coach Craig Berube, Liljegren found himself sidelined for the majority of the season. Although he has shown potential in the past, he often faced criticism for not being physical enough and for lacking a well-rounded game.
The Leafs' General Manager has focused on adding more physicality to the team, leading to a diminished role for Liljegren. Moving to San Jose provides him with the opportunity for a fresh start and a chance to secure a spot among the top four defensemen.
Struggles in his performance affected Liljegren's market value, which contributed to Toronto receiving only lower draft picks along with a seasoned defenseman in exchange.
