Tragic Loss: Columbus Blue Jackets Honor Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau in Touching Vigil

Fans and Columbus Blue Jackets players came together for a candlelight vigil to honor the memory of brothers Johnny Gaudreau and Matthew, who tragically lost their lives while cycling. They were struck by a vehicle.

At 7:49 p.m., candles were lit in tribute to Johnny's jersey number 13 and Matthew's 21, with the lighting lasting for 13 minutes and 21 seconds. A screen showed a slideshow celebrating the joyful moments in the brothers' lives.

Players such as Boone Jenner, Erik Gudbranson, and Cole Sillinger shared heartfelt stories and memories of Johnny Gaudreau. Gudbranson reminisced about Gaudreau's frequent tardiness and his affectionate hugs.

As the vigil concluded, the crowd passionately chanted "Johnny Hockey" in his honor. Earlier in the day, players and team management expressed their sorrow and solidarity with the Gaudreau family. Captain Jenner underscored the team's dedication to continuing strong in the face of adversity.

Waddell acknowledged the challenges left by Gaudreau's absence from the lineup, stressing the importance of mutual support. Gudbranson commended Gaudreau's positive influence and promised to uphold his spirit. Werenski noted the significant impact Gaudreau had on Columbus.

The Gaudreau brothers were hit by a driver suspected to be under the influence, who now faces several charges. Gudbranson took this moment to caution against driving while impaired, highlighting the devastating consequences.

NHLPA executive director Marty Walsh recognized the profound effect of Gaudreau's death on the entire hockey community.
