Buffalo Sabres News & Updates

Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen, the goaltender for the Buffalo Sabres, transitioned from being the third-string goalie last season to securing a five-year, $23.75 million contract, positioning him as a possible long-term solution in the net.

This agreement offers stability for the 25-year-old, who previously faced an uncertain future. For the Sabres, it addresses a previously unsettled goaltending role since trading Ryan Miller during the 2013-14 season.

Luukkonen, often referred to as "UPL," began the last season as the third goalie but managed to climb the ranks, eventually becoming the starter on December 30th. Over the season, he achieved a 17-9-1 record with four shutouts and concluded with a 27-22-4 record and five shutouts.

His performance was a rare positive for the Sabres, who extended their NHL-record playoff drought to 13 seasons, a factor that contributed to Coach Don Granato's dismissal. Granato has since been succeeded by Lindy Ruff.

During the past three seasons, Luukkonen has played in the minors and for Buffalo, combining for a 20-19-6 record. The Sabres anticipate him being one of their goalies this season, with Devon Levi and James Reimer vying for the backup position.
