Negotiations between the Tampa Bay Lightning and star center Steven Stamkos for a new contract have reached an impasse.
Stamkos, who serves as the team captain, will become an unrestricted free agent on Monday if no agreement is made.
The general manager of the Lightning expressed uncertainty about the deal's chances, even though discussions are ongoing.
Stamkos' agent has also indicated a lack of optimism for a pre-deadline agreement.
Stamkos is disappointed with the stalled negotiations, especially given his long tenure as the franchise leader in goals, points, and games played for the Lightning.
His playoff history includes two Stanley Cup titles and notable statistics.
Despite scoring 40 goals last season, Stamkos' future with the Lightning remains uncertain.
The Lightning are also working on a contract extension for defenseman Victor Hedman, who has one year left on his current deal.
The team aims to announce Hedman's extension soon.
