Los Angeles Kings defenseman Drew Doughty is set to undergo further evaluation for a lower-body injury he incurred during a preseason match against the Vegas Golden Knights.
The injury occurred when Doughty collided with Tanner Pearson in the first period, affecting his left leg. He was subsequently seen using a knee scooter and wearing a protective boot.
Kings captain Anze Kopitar shared his concern regarding Doughty's absence and emphasized the importance of addressing this challenge.
Coach Jim Hiller refrained from disclosing specific details about the tests but mentioned that an update is expected later in the day.
Over his 17 seasons with the Kings, Doughty has been integral to their defense, contributing 15 goals and 35 assists last season.
Doughty's injury leaves the Kings with two spots to fill among their top four defensemen, especially since Matt Roy has also departed. This opens opportunities for young talents like Brandt Clarke and Jordan Spence.
Clarke, a highly-touted NHL draft pick, has shown offensive promise but may require time to adjust to a balanced defensive role.
Spence, on the other hand, has established himself in a supporting capacity, recording two goals and 22 assists last season.
Mikey Anderson, Doughty's regular partner, acknowledged the challenge ahead and emphasized the team's collective effort to compensate for his absence.
