Arizona Coyotes News & Updates

The new NHL team in Salt Lake City will begin playing under the name Utah Hockey Club for its first season.

In April, Smith Entertainment Group, which owns the Utah Jazz, bought the Arizona Coyotes franchise. This deal was finalized on Thursday. Although Alex Meruelo keeps the intellectual property of the Coyotes, Utah now has the franchise, players, and the hockey operations department. The team will officially start in the next season.

Ryan Smith, who is the governor of Utah Hockey Club and chairman of Smith Entertainment Group, shared the state's enthusiasm for the new team. He thanked the NHL for their support and pointed out the challenges ahead.

The public is currently voting on the team's official name and mascot. The final options are Mammoth, Yeti, Outlaws, Blizzard, Venom, and Utah Hockey Club. The official name will be announced before the 2025-26 season.

For now, the team will use "Utah Hockey Club" as a temporary name, but the chosen color scheme will be permanent.

In the 2024-25 season, Utah Hockey Club jerseys will feature "Utah" written in stairstep lettering on the chest. The color scheme includes "rock black" for mountainous darkness and volcanic rock, "salt white" for snowy peaks and salt flats, and "mountain blue" to represent winter sports and clear skies.

The team is in the process of trademarking names and logos related to Utah Hockey Club. The home uniform will be rock black with "Utah" on the chest, and the away uniform will be salt white with a similar design. These uniforms, designed by Doubleday & Cartwright, align with the new Utah Jazz colors.

Fans can purchase Utah Hockey Club merchandise at the NHL draft party on June 28.
