Supporters of Utah's new NHL team have the opportunity to vote for its name from a list of 20 possibilities provided by Smith Entertainment Group.
The list comprises names such as Frost, Ice, Powder, Mountaineers, Freeze, Mammoth, Black Diamonds, Blast, Caribou, Blizzard, Swarm, Hive, Outlaws, Yeti, Squall, Fury, Glaciers, Canyons, Venom, and HC (Hockey Club).
Ryan Smith, the team's owner, has announced that the name of the team will be preceded by "Utah." The team's debut season will see "Utah" featured prominently on the jerseys, with the official team name, logo, and colors set to be introduced in the 2025-26 season following a branding initiative by Doubleday & Cartwright.
Smith has highlighted the significance of the local community's involvement in choosing the team's name. He believes that as the NHL team belongs to the community, it's crucial for the community to participate in the naming process. Smith, who owns the NBA team Utah Jazz, reiterated his commitment to making the NHL team a community asset.
The voting process is available until May 22, with expectations for more rounds to follow.
Having acquired the formerly known Arizona Coyotes, Smith Entertainment Group has moved the team to Salt Lake City with a purchase price of $1.2 billion. The team is set to play in the Delta Center, also the home of the Utah Jazz. Plans are in place for upgrading the arena for hockey compatibility, including a hockey-designed locker room and 12,000 seats that offer clear views.
Utah will make their selection with the sixth overall pick in the NHL draft after the draft lottery, which saw the San Jose Sharks emerging as victors.
