Mikhail Sergachev netted the game-winning goal in overtime, leading the Utah Hockey Club to a 3-2 triumph over the Montreal Canadiens on Tuesday night.
With only 27 seconds left in overtime, Sergachev scored after receiving a pass from Nick Schmaltz, concluding the match. Jack McBain and Dylan Guenther also scored for Utah, while Karel Vejmelka recorded 11 saves.
Montreal's goals came from Alex Newhook and Jayden Struble. The Canadiens have now experienced back-to-back losses following a 6-2 defeat against Vegas on Saturday. Sam Montembeault stopped 26 shots for Montreal.
Dylan Guenther began Utah's scoring in the second period with an assist from Clayton Keller. Shortly after, Struble leveled the score for Montreal, with Newhook putting them ahead in the early part of the third period. McBain equalized for Utah a few minutes later, paving the way for Sergachev's decisive goal in overtime.
Montreal faced challenges on the penalty kill, allowing multiple power-play opportunities for Utah within the first half of the game. Utah's rookie Maveric Lamoureux made his debut in his hometown of Montreal, drawing attention from the media.
The tying goal by McBain in the third period was pivotal, pushing the game into overtime and ultimately securing the win for Utah. In their last two games, the Canadiens have only managed to take 30 shots on goal, while Utah dominated with 14-5 shots in the first period and 8-3 in the second.
Montreal is set to begin a three-game road trip starting with the Columbus Blue Jackets on Wednesday. Meanwhile, Utah will welcome the Edmonton Oilers on Friday.
