Having clinched the advantage of playing at home in the opening round of the playoffs, the Edmonton Oilers are now focused on topping the Pacific Division standings. Their next challenge involves facing the Vancouver Canucks at home on a Saturday.
The Oilers are currently three points behind the Canucks, but they have an extra game to play. Connor McDavid, who is the current holder of the Hart Trophy, might make a comeback for this vital match after being sidelined with an injury to his lower body.
McDavid is presently third in the league for total points and is on the brink of becoming the fourth player ever to reach 100 assists in a single season.
On the other hand, the Canucks might see the return of their main goaltender, Thatcher Demko, who has been out due to a knee injury. Demko's presence on the ice would greatly benefit the Canucks.
Despite losing to Vancouver in all their three meetings this season, Edmonton's performance has notably improved under the guidance of interim coach Kris Knoblauch, with a record of 45-15-5 since his appointment.
Vancouver's coach Rick Tocchet acknowledged the transformation, stating that Edmonton's turnaround makes for a substantial challenge for his team as they prepare for the postseason.
