LAS VEGAS -- Vegas Golden Knights defenseman Brayden McNabb recently expressed his difficulty in imagining the team without Jonathan Marchessault in the locker room next year. This came just two days following the Golden Knights' first-round playoff exit at the hands of Dallas.
Seated next to Marchessault, McNabb's brief, yet profound "No" resonated deeply, underscoring the integral role Marchessault plays within the team, affectionately known as the "Golden Misfits." This term was coined by the original members of the Golden Knights.
Marchessault's journey from being undrafted to clinching the Conn Smythe Trophy as the playoff MVP last season is noteworthy. Among the original 2017-18 squad, he remains one of only five players, recently completing a stellar season with 42 goals. His performance was just a goal short of breaking William Karlsson's team record.
"I've done everything I can to stay here," Marchessault shared, highlighting his contributions and hopes to continue with the team that has become his home. Despite his uncertain future and desire to remain a Golden Knight, he acknowledged that the decision isn't solely in his hands.
After speaking with general manager Kelly McCrimmon, Marchessault was reassured of the team's interest in keeping him. However, he emphasized his need to be part of an organization that values him, especially as he prioritizes winning in the remaining years of his career.
Beyond Marchessault's situation, the Golden Knights face several roster decisions, especially regarding unrestricted free agents like William Carrier, Chandler Stephenson, Michael Amadio, Anthony Mantha, and Alec Martinez. With Mantha's future particularly uncertain after being a healthy scratch during some playoff games, the team must decide on a direction that could mark a significant transformation.
