In a thrilling finish, William Karlsson secured the lead for the Vegas Golden Knights by scoring the decisive goal with just over one minute left, resulting in a 4-2 win against the Utah Hockey Club on Friday night.
Karlsson netted two goals in the closing minutes, one of which was an empty-net goal. Tomas Hertl contributed significantly with two power-play goals for Vegas, erasing a two-goal deficit. Adin Hill was instrumental in goal, making 32 saves for the Golden Knights.
For Utah, Logan Cooley and Mikhail Sergachev each scored, with Karel Vejmelka stopping 25 shots. Cooley and Sergachev provided Utah with an early edge, scoring in the first and second periods respectively to give them a 2-0 lead.
Hertl put Vegas on the scoreboard late in the second period and later equalized the game in the third. Vegas's power play was pivotal to their comeback, leading to three of their goals while having the man advantage.
Regarding the takeaways, the Golden Knights found success on the power play, which compensated for their fewer shots on goal. On the other hand, Utah's strong defense kept them in the game, but their lack of offense in the final period allowed Vegas to mount a comeback.
The key moment of the game was Hertl's goal, which tied the game with 11 minutes and 37 seconds left in the third period. A notable statistic was Utah's 16 shots on goal in the first period, marking their highest total in any period this season.
Looking ahead, Vegas will host Washington on Sunday, while Utah is set to face the Capitals on Monday.
