Veteran defenseman Ryan Suter has signed a one-year deal with the St. Louis Blues. He will receive a base salary of $775,000, with a chance to earn an additional $2.225 million in performance-based bonuses.
At 39 years old, Suter was set to enter free agency following the Dallas Stars' run to the Western Conference finals. However, his contract with Dallas was bought out in June. This marks the second buyout in his career, as the Minnesota Wild had previously done the same.
Suter initially joined the Stars in 2021 on a three-year contract worth $14.6 million. With his advancing age, a reduction in pay was expected. In the most recent season, he netted two goals and accumulated 17 points while averaging 18:56 of ice time for the top-seeded Stars in the Western Conference. In the playoffs, he added one goal and four points, helping the Stars reach the third round.
