The Tampa Bay Lightning have named Victor Hedman as their new team captain, taking over from the departing Steven Stamkos.
Hedman, who has been with the Lightning for 15 seasons, is a well-regarded figure both within the team and throughout the NHL. His significant contributions were crucial to the Lightning's consecutive Stanley Cup wins in 2020 and 2021, where he earned the Playoff MVP title during their first victory.
General manager Julien BriseBois praised Hedman's character and leadership, highlighting how he embodies the spirit of the Tampa Bay Lightning. BriseBois expressed confidence in Hedman's capability to lead the team toward their objective of winning the Stanley Cup.
The Swedish defenseman has also been recognized for his excellence on the ice, winning the Norris Trophy as the NHL's best defenseman in 2018 and finishing among the top three in voting five other times.
In his new role, Hedman will be supported by alternate captains Ryan McDonagh and Nikita Kucherov as the Lightning transition into the era after Stamkos.
