Tampa Bay Lightning defenseman Victor Hedman has agreed to a four-year, $32 million contract extension that will be in effect for the 2025-26 season.
The retention of Hedman became essential after center Steven Stamkos left for Nashville. The Lightning had allocated cap space for Stamkos but chose not to enhance their offer.
As Stamkos approached free agency, the Lightning traded for forward Jake Guentzel, utilizing the cap space freed up by trading defenseman Mikhail Sergachev and forward Tanner Jeannot.
Selected second overall in the 2009 NHL draft, Hedman ranks second in games played for Tampa Bay. Last season, he tallied 76 points in 78 games, which included 13 goals and 63 assists.
Hedman stands third in assists and leads all defensemen in goals, assists, and points for the Lightning. He was instrumental in Tampa Bay's Stanley Cup victories in 2020 and 2021 and has claimed the Conn Smythe and Norris Trophies.
Additionally, the Lightning have extended defenseman Emil Lilleberg's contract by two years for $1.6 million, effective for the 2025-26 season. Lilleberg played in 37 games last season, providing five assists.
