The Washington Capitals have named Chris Patrick as the new general manager, with Brian MacLellan stepping into the role of president of hockey operations.
Patrick, who is 48 years old, has been part of the Capitals since 2009. For the past three years, he has been serving as assistant GM under MacLellan. His broad experience and ability to evaluate players make him a great fit for his new role.
MacLellan, aged 65, has a notable achievement on his resume, having led the Capitals to their first Stanley Cup victory in 2018. He will now work alongside Patrick and Dick Patrick, who continues as chairman.
This restructuring in the front office follows a trend within the NHL, where seasoned GMs transition into advisory roles. Similar succession plans have been seen in teams like Colorado and St. Louis.
