Washington Capitals News & Updates

The Washington Capitals have expressed their dissatisfaction following a harmful hit by New York Rangers newcomer Matt Rempe, which resulted in defenseman Trevor van Riemsdyk being injured during the third game of their series on Friday.

With less than eight minutes left in the first period, Rempe collided directly with van Riemsdyk, forcefully pushing him against the boards at the end of the rink. For his actions, Rempe was penalized with a minor interference call, yet van Riemsdyk was unable to continue playing in the game.

NHL authorities have decided against holding a hearing for Rempe, ignoring the Capitals' grievances. Since joining the NHL in February, Rempe has been noted for several harmful hits, one of which led to a suspension for four games.

Capitals forward Nic Dowd criticized Rempe's aggressive play, labeling the hit as "dirty." Similarly, defenseman John Carlson voiced frustration over the recurring injuries among his team, casting doubt over the acceptability of such aggressive tactics.

Spencer Carbery, the coach for the Capitals, remarked that he found Rempe's hit to be on the edge of acceptable play. While recognizing the role of physical play in the NHL, he stressed the critical importance of ensuring player safety.

As the Rangers aim to win the series in Game 4, which will be held on Sunday in Washington, Rempe has been impactful for his team despite his limited playing time, achieving a goal in three playoff appearances.
