Lars Eller makes a return to the Washington Capitals after spending seven seasons with the team and significantly contributing to their Stanley Cup triumph in 2018. In exchange for Eller, the Penguins obtained a fifth-round pick for 2025 and a third-round pick for 2027. During his time in Pittsburgh this season, Eller contributed with four goals and three assists over the course of 17 games.
The 35-year-old Eller offers his experience and reliability to the Capitals, who currently hold the third spot in the Metropolitan Division. Over his career, Eller has amassed 182 goals and 227 assists in a total of 1,053 games playing for Montreal, Washington, Colorado, and Pittsburgh. Capitals GM Chris Patrick expressed excitement at Eller's return, emphasizing the added strength and competitiveness he brings to their center position.
At the same time, the Pittsburgh Penguins are dealing with a lackluster start to their season, finding themselves barely two points clear of the bottom in the Eastern Conference. A devastating 7-1 defeat against Dallas led Evgeni Malkin to issue an apology to the fans, promising efforts to improve and develop a stronger team.
General Manager Kyle Dubas is faced with the challenge of keeping the team competitive while managing the advancing age of key players like Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, and Kris Letang. The team's difficulties in defense along with concerns over Tristan Jarry's goaltending have sparked discussions on possible changes in the roster. The decision to trade Eller is viewed as a step towards enhancing the team's pool of prospects.
