The stick used by Wayne Gretzky during the 1988 Stanley Cup Finals, in which the Edmonton Oilers won the championship, sold for an unprecedented $336,000. Sotheby's confirmed the sale, which included authentication from MeiGray and James Spence Authentication.
This stick came from Rick "The Stick" Elaschuk's personal collection. Elaschuk was a longtime employee of the Oilers. The sale occurred just before the Oilers played the Florida Panthers in Game 6 of the 2023 Stanley Cup Finals.
Previously, Gretzky's final-career stick fetched $138,600 in 2022, setting the previous record for an NHL-used stick. Other notable items from the 1988 Stanley Cup Finals include his jersey, which sold for $1.452 million, and his gloves, which sold for $204,162.
During the 1988 Finals, the Oilers achieved a sweep over the Boston Bruins. Game 4 was interrupted by a power outage and never concluded, leading to the series returning to Edmonton for the Oilers' ultimate championship victory.
Gretzky's performance in the 1988 Finals included 13 points, with 10 assists, establishing a series record. He remains the only NHL player to have his number retired across the entire league.
