The team was initially established in 1972, marking the NHL's expansion into the United States and was originally named the Atlanta Flames, based in Atlanta, Georgia. However, in 1980, the franchise moved to Calgary.

Their achievements include winning the prestigious Stanley Cup in 1989 and reaching the Stanley Cup Finals on three additional occasions – in 1986, 2004, and 2021.
