Originally the Hartford Whalers, the franchise was established in 1972 as part of the World Hockey Association. In 1979, they transitioned to the National Hockey League alongside the Edmonton Oilers, Quebec Nordiques, and Winnipeg Jets. The pinnacle of their time in Hartford came in 1986 when they reached the Stanley Cup semifinals, only to be defeated by the Edmonton Oilers, who went on to win the championship. In a significant shift, the team was sold and moved to North Carolina in 1997, adopting the new name of the Carolina Hurricanes.
The Hurricanes made an impressive run to the Stanley Cup Finals in 2002, though they were bested by the Detroit Red Wings in five games. However, they clinched their first Stanley Cup victory in 2006 by overcoming the Edmonton Oilers in a gripping seven-game series. Despite this success, they have struggled in the playoffs, failing to advance past the first round since 2009.
In a new chapter for the organization, a group led by Tom Dundon acquired the Hurricanes in 2018, steering the team through a period of rebuilding. With a focus on nurturing talent, the Hurricanes have emerged as a team to watch, bolstered by the skills of young stars such as Sebastian Aho, Andrei Svechnikov, and Teuvo Teravainen.
