The Montreal Canadiens, established on December 4, 1909, hold the distinction of being the world's oldest active professional ice hockey team and have earned a reputation as the sport's most successful franchise. Initially playing their games at the Jubilee Rink, they later moved to the Montreal Arena in 1918 and by 1924, they became a part of the National Hockey League (NHL). Despite a tough start, the 1930s saw a turn in fortune under the guidance of coach Dick Irvin and with the help of stars Howie Morenz and Aurele Joliat, leading to their first Stanley Cup in 1924. By the late 1940s, their trophy case boasted 10 more Stanley Cups.
The 1950s marked an era of continued success for the Canadiens as they clinched five additional Stanley Cups, thanks in part to noteworthy players like Maurice Richard, Jean Beliveau, and Guy Lafleur. This winning momentum extended into the 1960s and 1970s, with the team securing six more Stanley Cups. Recent times, however, have seen the Canadiens facing challenges in sustaining their historical dominance. Their last Stanley Cup win was in 1993, and since then, their appearances in the Stanley Cup Finals have been sparse. Despite these hurdles, the Canadiens enjoy a profound level of popularity within the NHL, supported by a large and dedicated fan base.
