Established in 1967 as an expansion team, the Pittsburgh Penguins are a professional ice hockey squad hailing from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. They compete in the Metropolitan Division, which is part of the Eastern Conference in the National Hockey League (NHL). The inaugural season for the Penguins was the 1967–68 season, and they currently play their home games at the PPG Paints Arena, which was inaugurated in 2010.
Throughout their history, the Penguins have clinched three Stanley Cup championships, occurring in 1991, 1992, and 2009, and have made six appearances in the Stanley Cup Finals. Additionally, the team has secured the Presidents' Trophy on two occasions, during the 1992–93 and 2007–08 seasons. Pittsburgh has honored seven players by retiring their numbers, including legends such as Les Binkley, Andy Bathgate, Paul Coffey, Bryan Trottier, Mario Lemieux, JaromĂr Jágr, and Sidney Crosby, with Mario Lemieux often heralded as the franchise's most illustrious player.
