Seattle Kraken History & Overview

Located in the Seattle metropolitan area, the Seattle Kraken is a professional ice hockey squad that marks the 32nd addition to the National Hockey League (NHL). They initiated their participation in the league during the 2021–22 season. Drawing inspiration from the legendary sea monster, the Kraken, the team’s name, logo, and color palette are a nod to this mythical entity. They host their games at the Climate Pledge Arena situated in Seattle, Washington.

Efforts to introduce an NHL team to Seattle started taking shape in the early 2000s. By 2008, a consortium of local investors led by Tod Leiweke, under the banner of HockeyVision Seattle, sought to negotiate a lease for a new arena and rallied support for a prospective NHL expansion team. Come 2018, the NHL Board of Governors unanimously greenlit Seattle’s application for a franchise, leading to the birth of the Seattle Kraken on July 23, 2020.

Making their first appearance on the NHL stage on October 12, 2021, the Kraken faced a debut defeat against the Vegas Golden Knights. However, their maiden victory was soon in the bag with a triumph over the Nashville Predators two days later. The Kraken concluded their opening season with a tally of 27–49–6, landing them in the eighth spot within the Pacific Division, thereby missing out on the playoffs. Despite the on-ice setbacks, the team experienced considerable success in other areas, drawing in substantial crowds and generating significant revenue.

Despite their relative newness, the Kraken have swiftly captured the hearts of Seattleites, cementing their status as a crowd favorite. With a dedicated ownership and a focus on assembling a formidable team, the Seattle Kraken are poised for an auspicious trajectory forward.
